Bill Ward , founding drummer of Black Sabbath , said during an interview with Eddie Trunk that he would like to return to the studio with the group's original lineup, but believes he no longer has the "ability" to play live.
Ward left the band in 2012, before the release of the album 13. Later, Ozzy Osbourne said that the drummer was physically unable to keep up with the album's tour, although Ward said the problem was only contractual.
While this debate unfolded, the group went on a world tour to say goodbye to the stage. Now, the drummer has finally admitted that he wouldn't be able to return to live performances: “Well, I don't feel finished with the Black Sabbath legacy (laughs). I haven't finished. They finished it for me, but I haven't finished. So, the others may have finished, but I haven't finished yet.”
“But realistically, when it comes to touring with Black Sabbath, I don’t have the know-how or the ability to lead a band like that on stage. I’d have to go back 60 years in time to be able to do that.”
He concludes by saying, “I’m being honest. I’ll be turning 73 on my next birthday, and I know what kind of energy it takes to lead this band.”
Ward made it clear that he wants to return to the studio with the band, with all the original members: “I haven’t spoken to anyone about this or any other subject. But I feel like I’m not done yet (…) I think as long as we all exist (laughs) and are breathing, I think we have a chance to create great music together.”
