Slash recalls his experience of dying from an overdose in the 1990s

Guns N' Roses guitarist died of an overdose and was resuscitated

In the 1990s, at the height of Guns N' Roses , guitarist Slash died of an overdose. The drug "speedball," a mixture of cocaine and heroin, caused him to suffer an eight-minute cardiac arrest in a hotel hallway. He was resuscitated.

Now, in an interview with BBC Radio 5 , Slash recalled the incident:

“I remember everything up to that point. And everything after that was waking up with the paramedics, and I was still in the hotel. I mean, it happened in the hotel hallway.”

The musician also detailed the sensation of coming back to life: “There’s this thing that happens when the paramedics wake you up from death like that, where it’s just, like, this huge shock of energy and lights, voices and pandemonium, and it’s an unmistakable feeling. I’ve had that a few times, and I remember it,” Slash explained.

The traumatic experience served as a lesson. Now sober, Slash feels blessed: “I’m very lucky that I managed to get through all of that, come out the other side, and have my passion for music intact and be physically well. I really consider myself super blessed, because it should have been different,” the musician revealed.
