Slash celebrated 15 years of sobriety last Sunday, the 4th. The milestone was celebrated by the guitarist's longtime girlfriend, Meegan Hodges.
Hodges used Instagram to celebrate the milestone and congratulate Slash on the achievement. "An addict who can achieve rehab is capable of achieving anything," she wrote in the caption of the photo, which shows the Guns N' Roses and his friend Jimmy Webb , the late punk fashion icon.
"I'm so proud of you every day, but today I'm especially proud. I love you so much." The photo gallery Hodges posted also includes an informative list about addiction and rehabilitation.
In 2001, Slash was diagnosed with a heart condition called cardiomyopathy, which, according to the guitarist himself, resulted from drug and alcohol abuse. This abuse caused his heart to deteriorate almost to the point of rupture, and doctors gave him only six days to live after he woke up, as he had been unconscious for two weeks.
Through extensive physiotherapy and rest, the guitarist recovered, and doctors implanted a small defibrillator in his heart to monitor his heartbeat.
