After Dave Grohl revealed that he was close to joining Gwar as a teenager and even planned his custom costume, the satirical thrash metal band's vocalist, Michael Bishop , confirmed the story to Rolling Stone and said that Grohl "made a mistake" in not accepting the offer.
Dave Grohl, who at the time was becoming known for playing in punk bands in Washington, D.C., said he abandoned the idea because he couldn't imagine inviting a family member to watch Gwar's graphic shows, with "blood and semen everywhere."
“We had seen Dave play in Dain Bramage and then in Scream ,” Bishop says. “He was already one of the best drummers, one of the heaviest I’ve ever seen, and still is.”
“I was really excited because I was playing bass at the time and I would have loved to jam with [Dave Grohl]. Think about it, he could have been working his ass off, playing drums in a rubber monster costume all these years. Man, he made the wrong choice.”
Michael Bishop's alter-ego in Gwar, Blöthar the Berserker , also made an appearance during the phone conversation with Rolling Stone , and gave his version of the story, which is more comical and fictional.
“We hired Grohl and then immediately called him and fired him. He was in the band for seven and a half minutes. He was holding us up,” he said.
