In an interview with Rolling Stone, Dave Grohl revealed that he almost joined the satirical thrash metal band Gwar as a teenager, when he still lived in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
Known for their gore- style performances , graphic and offensive lyrics, and bizarre stage costumes, Gwar isn't exactly the most suitable band for a family concert, and that's precisely what prevented young Dave Grohl from accepting the invitation.
“Gwar was looking for a drummer and I spoke to their guitarist, Dewey ,” recounts the Foo Fighters founder . “And he said, ‘That’s awesome and you can design your own outfit.’ As a drummer, you don’t want to wear something that completely covers your face and you want your arms free, so I thought, ‘Cool,’ and I started designing this outfit.”
“At the time, Gwar was a band that drew about 700 people [to a show], which was huge. And so, the more I thought about it, the more I questioned myself, 'Am I really going to invite my uncle to see me play at a show that has fake blood and semen everywhere?'” he concludes.
His career in Gwar didn't work out, but Dave Grohl's path eventually led him to Nirvana. The band forever defined the sound of the 90s and recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of their most celebrated album, Nevermind.
