King reminisces about that time
In an interview with Metal Hammer, Slayer guitarist Kerry King commented on the 90s and how Slayer was affected by the new wave of heavy rock that was emerging:
“In particular, I didn’t like the direction music was taking, and I let myself be affected by it for the only time in my career, which was basically the 90s. I couldn’t understand why it was becoming popular, and that made me sad. I had to forget about it and refocus because it was depressing me. I’m not talking about pop music and things like that. It was heavy music – I didn’t like the direction heavy music was taking.”
“For me especially, Diabolus In Musica needed to come out so that we could look and say, ‘That’s not what Slayer is, we need to rediscover ourselves and show everyone that Slayer is still here and that we’re not trying to be something we’re not.’ And I think that’s what God Hates Us All was .
