Jon Schaffer , guitarist for the band Iced Earth , has finally been given a date for his sentencing hearing for his involvement in the invasion of the United States Capitol , which occurred on January 6, 2021.
According to the website Loudwire , decisions regarding the course of the case were made last Friday, the 11th, when the judge responsible for the US District Court, Amit Priyavadan Mehta, issued a new order outlining the legal procedures to be followed.
As determined by the court, Jon Schaffer was referred to the U.S. Parole Office to prepare a present investigation report, which must be submitted by February 6, 2024. Additionally, the Parties' Sentencing Memoranda must be submitted by February 13, 2024, while any responses must be submitted by February 16, 2024.
"The sentencing for Jon Ryan Schaffer is scheduled for February 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in Courtroom 10, before Judge Amit P. Mehta," concludes the decision of the judge in charge of the case.
Schaffer was identified through photos as one of more than 400 individuals accused of storming the Capitol, in an act organized by the far right, after the "Stop The Steal" rally, an event organized by the far right in support of former President Donald Trump , following the rally in which the former president accused the elections of being fraudulent.
The Iced Earth guitarist consistently evaded authorities, making his location difficult to track. US authorities state that officers tasked with serving the summons made over twenty-four attempts at seven different addresses across three states. The musician surrendered to the FBI in Indianapolis approximately two weeks after the incident.
In April 2021, Schaffer pleaded guilty to a criminal complaint accusing him of obstructing an official process and entering and remaining in a restricted building with a deadly and dangerous weapon. If convicted, these charges could result in a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
It is important to reiterate that Jon Schaffer was described as a founding and lifelong member of the Oath Keepers, an extremist group that conspired to terrorize the U.S. District.
