In a recent interview with Howard Stern , Dave Grohl revealed the turning point in his life that led him to dedicate himself to music: a breakup with his high school sweetheart in seventh grade.
At the time, young Dave fell in love with a girl named Sandy and asked her to be his girlfriend. “She was my first love, so that was the first time my heart felt that emotion where you see this beautiful girl and you want her to love you, you want her to be yours. So when she accepted my offer to be the future Mrs. Grohl, I was overcome with joy. It was the best thing that had ever happened to me.”
According to the Foo Fighters , however, the relationship only lasted a week. “I’d only been playing guitar for two or three years, so I didn’t even know how to do it properly. So when she [Sandy] told me she didn’t want to be the future Mrs. Grohl anymore, I was so devastated that I consoled myself with the guitar. I channeled my pain and my broken heart in that direction,” he says.
Dave Grohl also revealed that at the time of the incident he had a dream in which he was playing with his band in an arena and that when he looked at the front row he saw Sandy crying, regretting having rejected him. Interestingly, the scene actually happened about 25 years later, when the artist was playing at a high school reunion in his hometown, but Sandy wasn't crying – she was smiling because Grohl had told her about the dream and she was trying to recreate it.
