This Wednesday, May 18th, marks a sad five years since the death of Chris Cornell . The singer was found dead in his hotel room in Detroit in 2017.
Although the official cause of death was identified as suicide , Cornell's widow, Vicky , questions the official report , saying that the musician had a prescription for the anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam which, according to her, was at a higher dosage than recommended and could have caused suicidal thoughts in the musician on that fateful night.
Last Tuesday, the 17th, Vicky shared a text in tribute to her late husband. “5 years ago, this would have been the worst day of our lives. It would have been the last time Chris hugged and kissed us, the last time he walked out the door. The last time he waved goodbye to us from the car. The last time we would see him,” she wrote.
“That night, 5 years ago, Chris would go on stage for the last time. It would be his last show, his last performance – but nobody knew that at the time. I saw the phrase 'you never know when the last time will be the last' and it rings too true.”
“If you had told me before he went on stage that fateful night that the night would end like this, I never would have believed it. No one who knows Chris would have. In our lifetime, everything has a last time – but in the moment you never know it will be the last time – until you look back.”
“Chris lived in the moment and didn’t underestimate anything. We forget how fragile life is, how fluid our relationships are, and how much things can change in a minute. Never miss an opportunity to tell someone you love them. Chris told us that every day.”
In the closing paragraphs, Vicky thanked the fans for their support and affection over the years and assured them that they were as loved by Chris as he was by them. “Tonight, in his memory, listen to your favorite Chris Cornell song at full volume and let out your love. #cornellforever,” she concluded.
Soundgarden 's bandmates also paid tribute to Cornell, but in a much more succinct way. "Chris, it's been five years since we missed you. You have love. You have peace. You have eternity. Love and peace to all our brothers and sisters in Soundgarden. Kisses," they wrote.
