In the chaotic year that 2020 has been, it's rare to find someone who isn't disturbed by everything that's happening, and Nergal , from Behemoth , is no exception.

In an interview for the radio program Full Metal Jackie , the artist shares how the last few months have been for him from a creative perspective, “First of all, I don’t think it’s very popular what I’m thinking and actually saying publicly, which is that I’m actually grateful for the quarantine. I try to embrace and appreciate all change, I welcome any change in my life,” he says, but adds reservations. “The fact that people are getting hurt or dying, there’s no fun in that. I want everyone to stay safe and live as long as possible. But then again, plagues have always been part of the landscape of life and we are actually confronting one of those plagues now.”

“We just need to relearn how to deal with it and how to live with life in terms of making money, basically living our lives. For me, it’s like, okay, cool, there’s a lot of good stuff…”, he says.

Despite the optimism, the political issues sweeping the globe this year certainly worry Nergal. When questioned about the importance of freedom of expression through his music, he said, “We see what’s happening to the world now, and it’s all going crazy. You have the United States. People all over Europe and Hungary and Turkey and so many countries, it seems like we’re going backwards. We’re not learning anything from our mistakes, past mistakes. I’m talking about the totalitarian regimes that would dominate and eventually they would kill millions and millions of Europeans.”

“It’s crucial to highlight this and have an open discussion. Sometimes using fists, sometimes not, but it’s very essential,” the artist emphasizes.
