Zakk Wylde wasn't the first guitarist considered for the Pantera that began last December. This information comes from Sterling Winfield , the band's longtime producer.

During an interview with KNON FM 89.3 Reckless Rock Radio , Winfield revealed that he had auditioned several guitarists to replace Dimebag Darrell , but "they always came back to Zakk." Regarding Charlie Benante , who filled in for the late drummer Vinnie Paul , "there was no doubt."

“There was no doubt in my mind that Charlie Benante would be the only drummer capable of replacing Vinnie. That was always absolutely obvious. However, there were some other guitarists who were considered for Dimebag Darrell's spot, but they wouldn't have been a good fit for the job. Honestly, I believe they wouldn't have been able to fit into the group.”

He continued: “With that, the subject always came back to Zakk, because it was obvious that he would be the only one who could replace Dime. He knew Dime better than any other guitarist on the planet. It's Dimebag Darrell's notes and riffs, but with Zakk Wylde.”

Last December, Pantera debuted their new project in Latin America, after 20 years without performing live. The lineup included Charlie Benante, Zakk Wylde, and original members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown . Unfortunately, Brown was unable to attend all the shows as he contracted COVID-19 and returned home.

The comeback took place at major events such as Hell & Heaven Metal Fest, Monterrey Metal Fest, Knotfest Colombia, Knotfest Chile, and Knotfest Brazil. The group also performed a show with Judas Priest in São Paulo.
