Zakk Wylde auditioned for Guns N' Roses in 1995, during the recording of Ozzy Osbourne 's Ozzmosis . In an interview (via SiriusXM ), the guitarist revealed more details about what happened.
Zakk begins by explaining how he met the guys in the band: “I met Slash when I joined Ozzy’s band. He came to my hotel room, we got drunk and everything. It was when Appetite For Destruction [Guns N' Roses album] was exploding. I met Duff [ McKagan , bassist], saw him a few times, and then Steven [ Adler , drummer] and things like that. I never met Izzy [guitarist] and I had never met Axl .”
He continues: “I remember when we were playing here [with Ozzy], it was in '95. Then Axl called me and said, 'Hey Zakk, it's Axl. I was thinking, wouldn't you like to join and play something with me and the guys? I was asking Slash who he'd like to play with and your name came up, so we wondered, why don't we give Zakk a call' and I was like, 'Yeah, sure'.”
Wylde adds, “You know, because obviously I love them, the guys are great and it’s an amazing band. So we’re playing something at this place they used to rehearse. We played there for a while, just some ideas, and then we went to do some stuff at Duff’s house, and then, you know, nothing was happening, like, are we going to do this or what are we going to do? Because I need to save money to buy a pizza and a soda for my girlfriend. You know what I mean?”
When asked if the musicians were actually creating new ideas instead of just rehearsing, he replies: “Yeah, riffs and everything. We had all these riffs that were just sitting there, but nothing was happening. Then Ozzy was like, 'Zakk, I can't just sit here and wait. I'm ready to go on tour.' You know, because this was after Ozzmosis . If it weren't for Ozzy, I wouldn't even be there talking to the guys from Guns N' Roses, you know? Because I owe everything to Ozzy, so this thing with Guns was dormant, nothing was happening. That's when Black Label Society was born.”
