The legacy of revolutionary artists lives on forever…. Or at least that's what we prefer to believe. Bands like Pink Floyd , Bon Jovi , David Bowie, U2 , and even the Beatles are unknown to a considerable portion of young Britons up to the age of 23, according to a recent survey.
The study, published by the radio brand Roberts , analyzed the degree of recognition among Generation Z (defined here as young people between 16 and 23 years old) regarding artists from other eras.
If you believe that only music from the past is good, the results may be somewhat disheartening, as 34% of young people surveyed agree that old music and artists are boring, and more than a third have no interest in listening to music released before the year they were born… which means having no interest in anything from before 2000.
Conducted on a sample of two thousand people, the research selected some names from older generations to discover trends in musical taste among different generations.
Only 40% of young people aged 16 to 22 know U2, while Bon Jovi and Pink Floyd are recognized by only 51.7%. Visionary artists like David Bowie and Prince are known by 53.8% and 53% of young people in the same age group, respectively.
The names most recognized by the young people interviewed are Paul McCartney (57.76%), Elvis Presley (67.24%), and The Beatles (68.97%). As Digital Music News , this means that one in three people up to 23 years old do not know the Beatles. According to the Roberts survey, the trend of decreasing numbers of fans of the band is common across different generations, but there was a 12% drop between the previous generation (24-42) and the Generation Z group (16-23).
