I was so happy I couldn't contain myself. It was my first rock/metal concert, and the best birthday present I've ever received
By Duda Gomes
I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a Monday morning, March 30, 2009, the day before my sixteenth birthday, and the day before Iron Maiden's first show in my city, Recife. Like every other morning, I was at school, attending an English class. I had spent the whole month trying to convince my parents to go to the show, but nothing seemed to persuade them, because for them only the "hardcore" crowd would attend, and I had no one to go with me.
So, during class, the professor asked if anyone in the class was going to the show. A couple of hands went up, and he said, “Oh, I only asked because I’m going to get a ticket to the show, but I’m afraid to go.” I, who was sitting in the front row, laughed. “Why are you afraid? I myself would do anything to go to that show! Especially since it’s on my birthday…” He looked surprised and said, “Well, if I get the ticket and decide not to go, I’ll give it to you.” At that moment, my heart raced. “Is this serious? You’re going to give me your ticket?” “Yes! Call me later, and I’ll confirm whether I’ll go or not.”.

I had the feeling that this was the beginning of something that already existed within me, but intensified, something I had never felt so strongly in my life: A passion for Heavy Metal.”
He gave me his cell phone number, and I spent the day waiting for the right moment to call. That night, I called the Professor and asked if he was really going to give me the ticket. “Look, Duda, unfortunately it won’t work. I won the ticket, but my friends are really insisting I go. I’m sorry.” I was a little sad because all my chances of seeing Iron Maiden had run out, but I told him it was no problem, and that he should enjoy the show, that he wouldn’t regret it. The next day, early in the morning, I was getting ready for school, feeling very sad, knowing I wasn’t going to the concert.
Suddenly, my cell phone rang. When I answered, I heard a voice on the other end: “Hello, Duda? It’s the teacher! Look, I’m not going to the show anymore, and I’m going to give you the ticket. I’ll be waiting for you at the main gate to give it to you.” I thanked him a thousand times, and when I hung up, I started jumping and screaming with joy. My parents asked what had happened, and I said I was going to get a ticket to the Iron Maiden concert. My father had no choice but to buy another ticket and go with me.
When I arrived at school, I went through the entrance turnstile (which, by the way, started playing a little birthday song) and saw the teacher with the ticket in his hand. He gave me a hug, wished me a happy birthday, and gave me the ticket. When I got to the classroom, everyone was speechless, unable to believe I had managed to get in. I was so happy I couldn't contain myself. It was my first rock/metal concert, and the best birthday present I'd ever received.

Later, my father arrived with his ticket and two Iron Maiden t-shirts. Since he takes everything in stride, he decided to get into the spirit of things. My mother took us to the Jockey Club in Recife, where the show was going to happen. We went in and waited. First, Lauren Harris, Steve Harris's daughter, opened the show. I confess I didn't really like her style, but it doesn't matter… I was going to see Iron Maiden! When Bruce Dickinson came on stage, I almost cried with emotion. Even my father, after about four beers, started enjoying the music. I was jumping, shouting, singing, and seeing so many people with the same feeling, I had a sense that this was the beginning of something in me that already existed, but intensified, something I had never felt so present in my life: The passion for Heavy Metal.
