The truth is, every day is Rock Day

by Paulo Magalhães

How to demonstrate the pain of being torn from home, the revolt of being enslaved, of being in a foreign land, of having one's freedom usurped, of being treated like an animal, and being punished if one displeases the one who bought one? How to express all the pain, physical and emotional? Pain, revolt, longing, this is the root of rock. The fusion of slave music with European music gave rise to the Blues; this is the beginning of all branches of Rock.

It was from this source that all great artists drank. It all begins with the lament of slaves, then the guitar appears electrifying feelings and music, which makes singers have to sing louder to be heard by the entire audience; thus, Rhythm and Blues is born. And with each new element added to the sound, a new branch of rock is born. Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones are known for having propelled the style, making the music known to the general public. But they all cite the Blues and its singers as the great inspiration for creating their sound.

Unlike other styles, Rock isn't limited to specific regions or countries. It's universal, regardless of the language it's sung in. It has the power to unite people and nations. How many times have you been headbanging to a song without knowing the lyrics? This happens because music speaks to our soul; we don't need to know the lyrics to feel touched by the song. In Rock, creed, race, or color don't matter. The only requirement is to enjoy good music, preferably at a high volume.

While the vast majority listen to music, headbangers breathe, eat, and drink music

Love, rebellion, indignation, religion, fiction, historical accounts, fantasy—there are no rules or limits to composing a song. But regardless of the theme, the only rule to follow is that every song has a chorus and a guitar solo. After all, every great song has its great solo. How else could we solo along using our imaginary guitar? This doesn't mean the rule can't be broken; in rock, anything is possible.

In rock, we are brothers, or as Manowar sings, "brothers of metal." The headbanger is different; while the vast majority listen to music, headbangers breathe, eat, and drink music. When picking up a record, they study the cover art, follow the lyrics, and evaluate the recording. They follow the bands, are interested in their history, are always looking for information, suffer during sad moments, and get emotional when they go to a show. This is proven by the packed rock shows and the size of the mosh pits that open up during the concerts. To those who don't share the taste for a good rock show, the mosh pits are nothing more than the pure expression of savagery, but only those who participate know what they really mean, and how good it is.

Over the years, society has adopted standards that dictate how to dress, how to behave, and the rules that all citizens must follow to be accepted. Of course, headbangers deviate from this standard, which is why they are discriminated against. Since it's always easier to label what doesn't fit the stereotype imposed by society, we are often marginalized.

We don't need a special date to listen to the music or watch the shows

Our relationship is so serious that we're not content with just listening to the music or going to the show; our fanaticism leads us to collect records, DVDs, books, magazines, newspaper clippings—in short, everything related to our favorite band. There are programs and websites dedicated to showcasing rock music collectors, where they display their records and suffer when they have to answer the fateful question, "What's the most precious item in your collection?" Is there still any doubt that we're not just consumers of a musical style? Rock is a lifestyle. I believe this relationship only exists in the world of rock; does anyone know a collector of Brazilian funk or country music records?

Since we live in a capitalist world, World Rock Day is just a date for merchants to make some extra money. The truth is that every day is Rock Day, because we don't need a special date to listen to the music or watch the shows. As it's a lifestyle, we live every day as Rock Day.

We are demanding, we like great music, and when the musicians we admire don't meet our expectations, we don't stay quiet, we buy the record, and we make our opinions count. That's why, and for other reasons, every day is World Rock Day.
