The first trailer for Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage has arrived, documenting the absolute chaos of the massive New York festival ahead of its 22nd anniversary later this month.
The film will premiere on HBO Max on July 23 and is the first part of the new Music Box , created by Bill Simmons (who will also present documentaries about artists such as Alanis Morissette, DMX , and Juice WRLD later this year).
It tells the story of the three-day event from multiple perspectives: by organizers Michael Lang and John Scher, artists who performed, such as Jonathan Davis of Korn , The Offspring and Scott Stapp of Creed, and by festival attendees and cultural critics.
The documentary puts American youth in the spotlight at the end of the millennium, in the shadow of Columbine and the Y2K hysteria. According to Warner Media, Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage pinpoints the exact cultural moment when the generation transformed its anguish in a seismic way.
"With a soundtrack featuring the most aggressive rock bands of the era, the film also re-evaluates the myths of the 1960s, revealing harsh truths about the dangers of rosy-tinted nostalgia in the age of commercialism and financial profit," stated Warner Media.
In addition to taking the stage with bands from the lineup, the film shows "cramped campsites, overflowing toilets, and groups of looting young people with alarming speed and access.".
