In January, David Lee Roth posted a video on YouTube titled "This Crazy Kid" Wolfgang Van Halen 's career and success is yet another case of nepotism in the music industry.

The video in question features audio of an imagined dialogue between David and Jesus Christ. During the conversation, the Jesus character says: “I just want people to know that I got this job because of my talents. I would have this job anyway, even if my father wasn't God,” alluding to Wolfgang, son of guitarist Eddie Van Halen .

The video continues with David making further complaints about the boy mentioned in the title, recounting incidents involving Wolfgang from the time when he was still a teenager and replaced Michael Anthony on bass in Van Halen .

An old fight

In an interview on the radio program The Morning X With Barnes & Leslie , Wolfgang Van Halen commented on the situation and believes that this animosity stems from Roth's relationship with his father, Eddie.

“I think I’m honored that he thinks of me as much as it seems. I think you have to take what he [David Lee Roth] says with a grain of salt. Considering he also said he wrote 'Eruption' and created Frankenstein [Eddie's red, white, and black striped guitar]. He said he wrote all the solos my father wrote.” (via Blabbermouth )

“It feels like I was born into this Van Halen drama that came way before me. And I think now that my dad isn’t here to be a target, I think he’s moved on to the next best option.” (via Consequence )

Tribute to Eddie Van Halen

Since Eddie Van Halen's death in 2020, there has been speculation about a tribute concert for the musician, but Wolfgang has already ruled out the possibility of participating in such a project. According to him, he currently has no desire to play Van Halen's music without his father.
