In a recent interview with Metal Hammer , Sharon Den Adel , vocalist for the symphonic metal band Within Temptation , spoke about her early career and the transition from the gothic metal of her debut album to a more epic and complex sound.

According to Den Adel, after the success of their second album, Mother Earth , Within Temptation felt the need to do something that was "good and special." According to the singer, the band sought inspiration in the soundtracks of two films that have become classics over time.

“In Mother Earth we already had a symphonic influence, but it wasn't a real orchestra. We wanted the sound to come from a real orchestra and not a computer. We wanted to develop it further, add something extra, make it sound more epic. We were very inspired by film music, such as the soundtracks of Gladiator and Braveheart .”

Sharon also spoke about the pressure she felt when it came time to make the third studio album. "At the time I thought we didn't feel [the pressure], but looking back now, I personally did," she says.

Mother Earth crossed the borders of the Netherlands, so we thought, 'Okay, apparently this could become something lasting, maybe we can be real musicians!' We all still had regular jobs, so we wanted to do something good and special with The Silent Force . For me, there was pressure. We had to take it seriously now!”
