In addition to being an actress, Jada Pinkett Smith had a metal band in the early 2000s called Wicked Wisdom and even participated in an edition of Ozzfest.
According to Will Smith , who recounted the story in his memoir , the invitation for the group to play at Ozzy Osbourne came from the rocker's partner, Sharon Osbourne.
Will described the festival as “hilarious as hell” and compared it to curling, a popular sport in the Winter Olympics (via MetalSucks ): “Ozzfest… the meeting of all metal subgenres. Thrash, industrial, hardcore punk, deathcore, metalcore, post-hardcore, alternative, death, gothic and nu. Sharon [ Osbourne , festival organizer] saw Jada’s band and part of her understood. The two became friends and Sharon put Wicked Wisdom on Ozzfest in the summer of 2005. Ozzfest is the least African-American event [I’ve ever seen] apart from that thing with a broom and a giant hockey stick with a puck that they have at the Olympics…”
The band led by Jada was, in fact, the only one to have a Black artist in a prominent position in that year's lineup.
He continued, “'Honey, are you sure you don't want to do something like R&B?' I asked subtly, but I really meant it. '[Metal] is the music that makes me feel.' Jada answered subtly, but she really meant it. So, we grabbed our kids and headed towards Ozzfest… Ozzfest is a purist audience, and what started with skepticism and disbelief, with each show was transformed first into silence, and finally into respect… Jada's performance at Ozzfest was so successful that Guns N' Roses wanted her to open for the group on their next tour.”
