Have you ever wondered what a combination of Queens of the Stone Age , Smashing Pumpkins , and Julio Iglesias ? That's one way to define the alternative rock of The Velvicks , a band formed by Brazilian musicians and based in New York that is gradually conquering its space in the music scene.
Recently, the group released their latest single, “Old Mistakes.” The track's structure is based on a repetition of the same four chords, but it's by no means redundant. Quite the opposite: the changes in instrument layers, dynamics, and intensity build a unique energy, culminating in an explosive and cathartic ending.
Fans who have been to one of the band's shows will recognize the song; "Old Mistakes" was already part of the setlist on the band's various tours in the United States, and is usually a highlight of the performances due to its strong impact. Therefore, it was important that this energy was also present in the recording: "We produced and recorded the song ourselves, and we chose a very organic approach," says Vick Nader , the band's vocalist. "Everything you hear in the recording was designed to be replicated on stage."
Like all the best rock and roll stories of the early 21st century, The Velvicks formed in a basement in Brooklyn, New York, after Vick Nader started writing songs for fun with his Brazilian friends, Vinny and Ed . They began playing at parties and the band quickly grew. After a spontaneous meeting with an event promoter at one of these parties, and the addition of members Dennis D'Angelo and JV Vidopio , what is now The Velvicks was formed.
“Old Mistakes” is a release from the ForMusic Records .
