Malvada - female band that has been gaining significant prominence in the rock scene, featuring talented instrumentalists and powerful music.
In an interview with Wikimetal , vocalist Indira Castillo and drummer Juliana Salgado shared some information about the band's upcoming album, as well as their experience at Rock In Rio and Best Of Blues, their expectations for the Matanza Ritual Fest, and more!
Changes in training
In 2021, Malvada released A Noite Vai Ferver , and at the time, the band consisted of Angel Sberse on vocals, Bruna Tsuruda on guitar, Ma Langer on bass, and Salgado. The drummer described the departure of the vocalist and bassist as something "natural": "These were things that didn't surprise anyone. You could feel that it was going to happen at some point, so we were kind of prepared for the news, because they were the ones who wanted to leave the band."
Currently, the band consists of Salgado and Tsuruda, in addition to Castillo and Rafaela Reoli on bass. The replacement and departure, as Salgado describes, "wasn't dramatic": "we didn't lose anything at all, right? We gained even more, I think. And much more energy for the band to follow the path it needs to follow."
New record label
Furthermore, another change from the first album to this upcoming one is the record label. " A Noite Vai Ferver" was released by Shingami Records, but now the band has signed with Frontiers Records. The drummer explained that with the previous label, the contract was only for the first album, "nothing fixed": "We didn't have a record label, and now we have a label that's investing in our career, right?"
Salgado described the achievement as "an accomplishment": "When the contract was actually signed, it was the culmination of all the work we'd been doing all these years, and the girls came in to add even more to it."
Frontiers works with some big names in the rock and metal scene. Which band would they like to feature with? Whitesnake : "I was going to say, 'White,' and then you'd say, 'Snake.'"
Rock In Rio and Best Of Blues
Speaking about Malvada's performances at Rock In Rio 2022 and Best Of Blues 2023, Juliana Salgado confirmed that yes, she does get butterflies in her stomach, "For God's sake, I've never been so nervous about a show as I was at Rock In Rio."
"Like, I couldn't think of anything else, just getting on stage. Not messing up. And getting off stage. You can't... You know, it's like a moment that lasts 5 minutes in your head really fast, because you're not thinking about anything."
In comparison, the Best Of Blues show was more "relaxed" because, despite having a much larger audience watching the show, it was more dedicated. "But like that, once he stepped on stage, it was over. At Rock In Rio, it wasn't like that. Once he stepped on stage, he continued until the very last second."
The songs
One of Malvada's great distinguishing features is the fact that all the songs are in Portuguese. They wanted to "bring a breath of fresh air to the people, the rock audience," and the fact that the songs are in Portuguese was to "reach the masses," because "it speaks more to the general public, right? The general public, not just the rock niche, the rock niche, and so on, but a whole audience."
The note that the band shared on their Instagram regarding the change of record labels also included the information that the new work will have songs in English: "I believe that English, we believe that English will really communicate more, right?", explained Indira Castillo, "So it will be a hybrid work, it will be an English and Portuguese work."
New style and album
According to Juliana Salgado, "The band changed its style." When talking about hard rock, she explains that "Since it was something the four of us had in common, we didn't yet have as much maturity as we do now."
She says that hard rock "is no longer the main focus" and that it's now "in the details, in the nuances. It's no longer the main focus."
"Now it's a much more modern thing, a much more current sound. With the influences of this girl here, all jazz, blues, I don't know what, you know?" and the lyrics of the songs were described as "very diverse".
They don't have a definitive date for when Malvada's new album will be released, but singles will come out at the beginning of the year and "The whole album should come out at the end of the first half of the year."
Matanza Ritual Fest
Malvada, along with Crypta and Black Pantera , will be playing at Matanza Ritual Fest this Saturday, the 9th, and expectations, as the vocalist herself said, are very high: "I think it's not just because of the festival itself, right, the bands that are involved and everyone who is participating, which will make this happen, but also the venue, at Audio, so there are good expectations on Malvada's part."
The girls promised "surprises," but didn't give any more spoilers. "If we say anything, it'll spoil the surprise, right? So it's best to... wait and see who's at the event."
