Shaker Aamer spent 13 years in prison

Shaker Aamer, the last British citizen to leave Guantanamo prison, said that Whitesnake was one of the factors that helped in his recovery. Aamer was imprisoned for more than 13 years without being formally charged and was released on October 30th.

According to Aamer, Whitesnake was one of the bands used for sonic torture, where the strategy was to play music at deafening volumes. The prisoner specifically mentioned the song " Here I Go Again" :

“I used to sing a lot because I felt the lyrics resonated with me. The words made me feel like myself again. 'Like a wanderer I was born to walk alone, for I know what it is to walk alone down the street of dreams' (excerpt from the song). And it's true because they are just dreams. Dreams that I would be back home again, that I would be free, that Guantanamo would be closed.”.

Aamer's statement was made to the BBC, in his first interview since leaving Guantanamo.
