Dream Theater is coming to Rock in Rio 2022 , where they will perform on September 2nd on the Palco Mundo stage, and will also take the opportunity to perform in São Paulo on August 31st.

Watching a show at a festival like Rock in Rio is a unique experience, but of course, there are several differences between a festival performance and a solo show. Here, we'll talk about those differences.

Set duration

The most obvious difference is the set length. Depending on the festival, the artist may only have 45 minutes to play, limiting the setlist to an average of 10 songs. In a solo show, however, the group has the freedom to create a setlist with as many tracks as they want, as well as time to talk and interact with fans, and, of course, solos. In a band like Dream Theater, the instrumental aspect is extremely important, and in a solo show, there's more time to explore that.

House size and audience capacity

At Rock in Rio, 700,000 people fill the City of Rock, severely limiting fan access to the audience. If you're the type of fan who likes to be right in front of the stage, you'll need a lot of planning, whereas at a solo show, things are much easier.

Possibility of classics, rarities and B-sides in the setlist.

In a solo show, as mentioned above, the group has more freedom to choose their setlist, so it's common that in these moments, classics that haven't been played in a while or rarities that don't usually appear in the setlist might be included now.

Current Dream Theater setlist

The setlist at a festival can vary greatly from one performance to another. But in the band's recent shows, they've been playing 10 songs, which might seem short and similar to a shortened festival set, but the group performs the songs for 2 hours, reminding us that they'll have time to explore the songs further.

Check out the setlist from the band's last show, which took place on June 1st in Istanbul, Turkey:

1. The Alien
2. 6:00
3. Awaken the Master
4. Bridges in the Sky
5. Endless Sacrifice
6. Invisible Monster
7. About to Crash
8. The Ministry of Lost Souls
9. A View From the Top of the World
10. The Count of Tuscany
