"Through Wikimetal, I discovered many great bands from the national and international scene."

by Marco Vallim

At various times I thought about recording a WikiMinute. But I decided to gather all the WikiMinutes I've ever considered recording and summarize them under one aspect: Wikimetal.

My history with Wikimetal began long before I first heard Wikimetal. On November 16, 2011, when I created one of those thousands of humor pages focused on Heavy Metal on Facebook. The page's name is Meavy Hetal.

The page grew considerably and took on proportions far beyond what was expected, and without any promotional effort, it reached 5,000 "likes" before the end of that year. But that's not important. In 2012, with the page growing, they tried (and succeeded) in convincing me to resume an old podcast project that I started in 2010 for a blog I wrote, which never got past the pilot episode. I accepted, recorded a few episodes, and felt lost, not knowing which direction to take. I went looking for some podcasts I used to listen to in the past; among them, only METALCAST, a British podcast, was still active. I then remembered a name I had heard a few weeks before, which involved the return of a major band for a grand tour across Brazil. It was Wikimetal promoting Viper's tour last year.

I then listened to Wikimetal for the first time; it was the first episode where they interviewed the legend Eddie Trunk, host of That Metal Show. I saw that there was nothing there that fit the format of my iPod, but I fell in love with the style of the podcast.

I also saw that Wikimetal was different, and on the same day I sent an email congratulating the entire Wikitrio and the podcast initiative, suggesting the band Mundo Cao as a National Pride. If my memory serves me right, the band played on the podcast within two weeks. Truly, the podcast was different.

I looked up previous episodes, listened to several interviews before this one, which were really cool, with Max Cavalera, Cristina Scabbia, Dani Nolden, in a special double episode, and it was that episode that caught my attention—a certain band called HellArise! I looked them up and liked them, even though they only had a demo. Through Wikimetal I discovered many good bands, One Arm Away, Nervosa, No Way, among so many other great bands from the national and international scene.

Back in 2012, I had the chance to talk to Viper, get autographs, and truly interact with a band that, six months earlier, I couldn't even imagine seeing live. I saw them twice that year, and also attended the sensational Meet and Drink event that Wikimetal organized! Something unimaginable.

Time passed, things happened, and now Wikimetal strikes again:

The Shadowside + SupreMa show! Another meet and drink, I had the opportunity to chat with the power trio again, talk to Dani Nolden, someone I admire very much, and talk to the musicians from both bands after seeing a world-class show from the front row, by the barrier!!

I had the opportunity to interact with other people, musicians, and band members. One person in particular I met precisely because of Wikimetal: Diana, the vocalist of the band No Way. Today, she's a great friend. I recently went to one of their shows in Jandira, and I can say: They're going places.

The band HellArise, which I mentioned a few paragraphs above? I discovered the band through Wikimetal and today I'm their bassist!

As I write this, we're excited about finishing the recordings for our next EP and making plans with the band No Way for something special that we'll try to come up with in the very near future!

They bring me laughter, good music, and allow me to hear interesting stories from legendary people.”

It would be crazy (or naive) to say that everything happened only because of Wikimetal, but without a doubt, I developed friendships, grew musically, acquired knowledge, and experienced unique moments that I will tell my grandchildren about. And all of this had a significant, important, I would even say fundamental role played by a certain power trio that I listen to every week in my car, with the radio connected to my iPod or on my computer.

They make me laugh, play good music (often music I didn't even know existed), and let me hear interesting stories from legendary people like Doro, Jeff Waters, Carlos Lopes, Wolf Hoffman, and many others who aren't even worth listing here; just look at the website and download them.

All the episodes are worthwhile, even if you don't know or like the band. I wanted to thank Wikimetal for all of this and say that I will be present at other events, experiencing another chapter in the story. Not just the story of Wikimetal, but, without any fear of exaggeration, I can say that it will be another chapter in the history of Brazilian Heavy Metal, because Wikimetal has already done a lot, can and will do much more for each and every Brazilian headbanger!

Keep Up The Metal!
