Sammy Hagar , former vocalist of Van Halen , doesn't believe the band would release a box set with unreleased old material from his time in the band.
According to an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune , there isn't much unreleased material that would be useful for a future release. "Van Halen didn't have many songs that were completed and not released. Maybe there are some things we could add background vocals to or that I could write new lyrics for," he said.
Despite this, Hagar doesn't believe it's feasible to work on any past music. "But I'm skeptical about that, because Van Halen's legacy is so great, and – before I joined the band – the legacy is pure greatness: Eddie's guitar work, the band's playing style, the songs," he said. "Anything left over wasn't good enough to be on those records. I don't care what anyone says; releasing [unreleased music] wouldn't do anything other than generate a little money for someone."
Hagar was the vocalist for Van Halen from 1985 to 1996 and from 2003 to 2005, but claimed last year that he felt the band was trying to " bury" the legacy he built when they toured with David Lee Roth again. "They didn't do remasters, they didn't allow it to be shown in films, they didn't allow it to be licensed for video games and commercials," he complained .
