In an interview with Guitar Player , Sammy Hagar talked about the creation of Van Halen ," which is found on the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991).
According to Hagar, it all started right at the beginning of the album writing sessions, when Eddie Van Halen played a song on the piano that he had been messing around with since 1983. Sammy Hagar says he liked the song, but "didn't know what to do with it," so the duo put the composition aside and started working on another track that would become "Poundcake."
Weeks later, however, the answer came to Hagar during a day at the beach when he was trying to escape his commitments at the studio.
“It was a very beautiful day and I thought to myself: ‘I don’t want to go anywhere. I just want to be here and now’,” says the vocalist. “Eddie always played that composition for me, trying to inspire me. I probably listened to it 100 times. Then, one day I started singing along to the melody and it came to me. Everything fell into place and made sense. The lyrics came to me and I told Eddie: ‘It’s written. Let’s record it.’”
The musician said he knew "Right Now" would be a hit as soon as he heard a playback of the complete recording. "The chorus, that iconic piano. It was spot on. The song would have been great even if I sang about cat food," he comments.
