U2 is working on new music, as confirmed by The Edge . The band recently released the album Songs of Surrender , featuring reinterpretations and versions of classic songs from their career.
When it comes to completely new material, the news is good, although the band has no concrete plans at the moment. In an interview with Guitar Player (via NME ), the musician confirmed U2's intention to release a new album with an emphasis on guitar.
“I’ve been working a lot on new guitar music and I’m very excited about it. It’s at that prototype stage, where… Who knows?” he said. “I’m feeling very excited about the guitar for the first time in a while. Maybe it has something to do with the lockdown, having time to not do much (…). We are [working on new music]. We have a lot of excellent material in progress.”
The Edge's statement complements Bono's desire to release a more raw and direct rock 'n' roll album with U2. “Now we need to put the firepower of rock 'n' roll back [into the band's sound]. I don't know who's going to make our fucking rock 'n' roll album. You almost want to sound like AC /DC , you want Mutt Lange [producer]. The approach. The discipline. The songwriting discipline. That's what we want,” the vocalist told The New York Times .
On their album Songs of Surrender , released in March of this year, the band launched reimagined and "updated" versions of 40 of their career hits, such as "One," "Beautiful Day," and "Sunday Bloody Sunday."
