Transgender vocalist of Thrash Metal band wins election in the US

Danica Roem was elected by a large margin

Danica Roem became the first openly transgender person to be elected to a constituent office in United States history.

Roem is the vocalist for the band Cab Ride Home, a Thrash Metal group from Virginia formed in 2006, but which only released its debut album, titled Crash The Gate, .

The vocalist won the seat in the Virginia House of Representatives by a wide margin over Republican candidate Robert Marshall, who was seeking re-election after 13 terms.

Earlier in the year, Marshall had tried to pass a law restricting the use of public restrooms by transgender people.

“Discrimination is disqualifying,” Roem said in his victory speech: “This victory was a message from people rejecting cowardly tactics, rejecting phobias… Because we celebrate who you are for who you are, and not despite who you are.”
