Thirteen years after their last visit to Brazil, the classic metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada returns to the country for two shows. The first will take place in Curitiba and the second in São Paulo, on August 16th and 17th. The production is by Liberation Music Company , which is bringing the group to the country for the third time.
This is a show that marks the return of metalcore tours, which were so popular here between the 2000s and 2010s but lost ground to other musical genres. With the post-pandemic boom of the emo style, old fans will have to share the stage with new fans who have arrived for the scene's third wave of success.
Fortunately, one of The Devil Wears Prada's greatest characteristics has always been the chameleon-like approach they've maintained throughout their more than 10 releases. The band possesses one of the most interesting legacies in the scene. And they achieved prominence precisely by embracing new references and always following the less obvious path.
Here we tell a little more about this story.
Formation and first albums of The Devil Wears Prada: Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord (2006) and Plagues (2007)
The Devil Wears Prada was formed in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio, as a Christian metalcore band. Currently composed of members Mike Hranica (vocals), Jeremy DePoyster (guitar, vocals), Kyle Sipress (guitar, backing vocals), Mason Nagy (bass), Jonathan Gering (keyboards, backing vocals), and Giuseppe Capolupo (drums), the band maintained its original lineup for many years until keyboardist James Baney , drummer Daniel Williams , and guitarist Chris Rubey left the band in 2013, 2015, and 2016, respectively.
The band's first performances were in 2005, and from their very first moments, they gained a strong following thanks to the power of their music and the intensity of their live shows. That same year, after releasing the demo * Patterns of a Horizon *, TDWP caught the attention of Rise Records . In 2006, all the songs from the demo were re-recorded and re-released as a studio album, titled *Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord *.
After a few shows across the United States, causing quite a stir in the scene in 2007 the band released an album that would be the turning point for their success. With the help of the internet, at a time when going viral was difficult as it is today, the single " HTML Rulez D00d " became a hit on the now-defunct social network MySpace and on TV channels like MTV , which aired the music video. As a result, the album Plagues reached number 57 on the Billboard 200 that year, becoming the band's first major hit.
With Roots Above and Branches Below (2009)
It was during the tour for their third studio album, With Roots Above and Branches Below , that TDWP came to Brazil for the first time, in 2010. Before this release, the band reached its first major peak: they played at the Warped Tour , toured with A Day To Remember , Underoath , Saosin, and Emarosa . The single "Dez Moines" was featured in the game Guitar Hero: World Tour . Finally, in 2010 they were voted Band of the Year 2009 Alternative Press
The album was also a huge success, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200. Songs like "Assistant to the Regional Manager" and "Danger: Wildman" became classics of the scene. It's an album that has aged very well and demonstrates the maturity of a band that was learning to build and acquire its own musical style.
Zombie EP (2010) and Dead Throne (2011)
Anyone who experienced the early 2010s metalcore scene recognizes the importance of the Zombie EP . It was a true game-changer for the genre. Consisting of 5 songs revolving around the theme of a zombie apocalypse, the EP is brutal and extremely heavy, with influences from bands like Slayer and Hatebreed . It was well-received by both specialized media and fans. With distinctive elements like sounds of guns, chainsaws, and sirens, The Devil Wears Prada created a classic that could never be left out of any of their setlists.
In 2011 came the album Dead Throne , another commercial success that reached number 10 on the Billboard 200. Here the band decided to go down a more experimental and technical path in metalcore, less produced and more violent. The lyrical process also changed considerably, going from lyrics with Christian themes to anthological themes such as anti-idolatry.
8:18 (2013), Space EP (2015) and Transit Blues (2016)
8:18 was the band's fifth studio album. Lyrically sad and heavy, the album is more melodic but also draws on influences from industrial, hardcore punk, and heavy metal. Another commercial success on the Billboard 200 , it reached second place on the hard rock charts, behind only Avenged Sevenfold 's Hail to the King . This was the last album with founding members Daniel Williams and Chris Rubey still in the band. The name is inspired by a passage from the Bible, Romans 8:18, which says:
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us..”
In 2015, following lineup changes, TDWP released their second themed EP, titled Space . The EP revolves around space and planetary themes. In 2016 came their sixth album, Transit Blues , which introduced Giuseppe Capolupo as drummer and Kyle Sipress as guitarist. It's not the group's most successful album, but it received good reviews from the media.
The Act (2019) and ZII (2021)
In 2019, before the release of their seventh album , The Act , vocalist Mike Hranica said in an interview that they wanted to do something that pushed the boundaries. Something inventive, "something you rarely see in rock today," said the vocalist. The release was entirely inspired by Chelsea Wolfe 's Hiss Spun . It's diverse and eclectic. The songs combine heavy guitar riffs, even influenced by grunge, with electronic effects, creating a very atmospheric soundscape across the album's 12 tracks.
In 2021, inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic, they released the sequel to the massive Zombie EP , titled ZII . Very well received by their fans, the work is excellent in its almost raw brutality. There is no intention to compete with the first EP, but rather to complement it. The EP shows the band's evolution while also celebrating its past. It was the first work with current bassist Mason Nagy.
The Devil Wears Prada's most recent work, Color Decay (2022)
The group's latest work is the album Color Decay , which has established itself as one of the band's best releases. Innovative and showcasing one of the new facets of modern metalcore, the album flawlessly blends the heaviest elements and screams with lighter melodies and poetic lyrics.
It's undeniable that the band has evolved and matured its style throughout its 20 years of existence, incorporating references and experimenting with diverse paths and sounds. And that's precisely what makes The Devil Wears Prada so indispensable in the history of metalcore.
