Tom Morello has released his new single “Adjourn It” featuring Serj Tankian and Roman Morello, the guitarist's 15-year-old son, and calls on listeners to resist the rising tide of fascism.
Excerpts from the film Salt of the Earth (1954) appear throughout the music video for “Adjourn It” to reflect the theme of resistance in the face of prejudice and injustice. The film is based on a true story about Mexican-American miners fighting against labor exploitation, racism, and institutional oppression, and was made by three Hollywood professionals who were blacklisted for their political convictions.
Tom Morello commented on the new single: “In this historic moment, all art is an act of resistance, and 'Adjourn It,' a collaboration with my longtime friend Serj Tankian and my 15-year-old son, guitar prodigy Roman Morello, is an urgent call for justice in unjust times. This new track from my upcoming solo album combines crushing, multi-generational riffs from the Morellos with the prophetic vocals of the great Serj Tankian. Inspired by the persecution of immigrants across the country and the heroic resistance to the rising tide of fascism, it’s high time to rock out for freedom, justice, and equality.”
Serj Tankian added: “'Adjourn It' is an anthem of protest against the ongoing barbarity perpetrated by ICE in the United States — separating families, practicing racial profiling, and in some cases, killing people. As a democracy, we should be outraged that our own government has done this to brothers and sisters who were simply trying to secure a dignified life for their families. There is smart immigration and naturalization policy — and there is this. Many of these cases would be stayed by judges if there were due process. Defer it!”
Earlier this year, Tom and Bruce Springsteen were in Minnesota protesting ICE operations in Minneapolis and the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. This month, in New York, Morello also joined the organization Hands Off NYC in a protest against ICE and its abuses in front of 26 Federal Plaza, an immigration court located in Manhattan. The track was produced by Zakk Cervini and written by Tom, Serj, Zakk, and Roman.
