Is it possible to separate the artist from the art?
Guitarist Tom Morello (Prophets Of Rage, Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave) spoke with Hard Drive Radio and raised the question: is it possible to separate the artist from the art?
In the interview, Morello says he's a big fan of Mötley Crüe and AC/DC but disagrees with their misogynistic and devil-worshipping lyrics, and exemplifies the situation by citing two of his friends.
“I’m a fan of Ted Nugent’s [who holds homophobic and racist views] and Kid Rock’s [an avowed Republican] music, and I like them both as people; I consider them friends. There are people I may not agree with, but they are good, decent people, and I’m proud to be their friends. There’s no litmus test – and there certainly wasn’t with Rage Against The Machine, nor is there with Prophets Of Rage. You don’t have to agree with the message to enjoy it. There’s a place for you in the audience.”
He concludes by saying that liking these bands doesn't make him hate women or worship the devil.
