Dio 's Holy Diver is one of the most iconic heavy metal albums, not only for its incredible music but also for its legendary and mysterious cover.
To the delight of fans, Z2 Comics will release a graphic novel telling the story behind the priest who was thrown into the sea by a demonic figure. The company invited Steve Niles to write the comic, while Scott Hampton will do the art.
Wendy Dio , widow of Ronnie James Dio , approved of the idea: “Steve Niles telling the story behind the cover of Holy Diver , a story about how we can't judge a book by its cover, is a subject that Ronnie always wrote about in his songs; that you need to see the person's inner self and not judge them by their appearance or the clothes they wear.”
Besides unraveling the mystery of why the priest was thrown into the sea, the story will also answer the question "who really is the villain in this story?".
The graphic novel Holy Diver is available for pre-order from Z2 Comics and will be officially released in June 2021. The graphic novel will also have a deluxe edition including a copy of the Holy Diver , three artworks inspired by the album, and a limited edition hardcover version of the book.
The cover art for the album Holy Diver was originally created by Gene Hunter and Randy Berett in 1983, and the book cover by Bill Sienkiewicz.
