Marilyn Manson has always been a controversial artist. He is one of the great examples of "love him or hate him," and unfortunately, this has intensified with the accusations of sexual harassment and violence that have surfaced in recent days, such as the news from last Wednesday, the 19th, in which Ashley Walters , Marilyn Manson's former personal assistant, filed a lawsuit against the musician for sexual discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, interference with the exercise of civil rights in violation of the Bane Act, sexual assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Many are commenting that they expected this, that people involved with him should have known such acts could happen, and that they no longer believe the accusations because they only surfaced now and many don't even seem true. It's important to emphasize that we should not support any kind of abuse, and that such behavior should be condemned, whether committed by an artist or an ordinary person. Physical and mental abuse can cause distress, and that is extremely serious.

With these accusations, Manson enters an area where many musicians have been placed before, for various reasons: Phil Anselmo ( Pantera ) with his supremacist comments and salutes , Jon Schaffer ( Iced Earth ) for participating in the Capitol invasion , an act that resulted in several injuries and deaths, Tom Araya ( Slayer ) for his support of former President Donald Trump, and the list could go on. The point is that people end up judging individuals, and this also affects the band.

The "cancel culture" crowd goes beyond individual actions and ends up crucifying the band as well, but this happens selectively. How is this selective? It's simple: these people choose who will be canceled, their choice based on preferences or an attempt to please the environment they're in. Canceling Burzum is easy (even though many people like the band), but what about artists who have worn t-shirts with swastikas ( Sepultura , in their early days, played in venues wearing these shirts), the late Lemmy who collected items worn by Nazis, and even Rammstein , who are always full of controversy with their lyrics?

It's very clear that we must separate artistic work from the private life of a musician. Let rock stars do what they want in their private lives; we are concerned with their respective music and albums. If they do something illegal, they should be held accountable for their actions. We can never stop giving artistic credit to bands like Motorhead, Slayer, Exodus, Sepultura, Megadeth, Behemoth, and Pantera . This writer has always been and always will be a fan of Marilyn Manson (the band), and will always insist on separating the artist from their work.

If you or someone you know has been sexually abused, there are resources that can help. Call 100 (Women, Family and Human Rights hotline), call 180 (Women's Helpline for Victims of Violence), or email [email protected ]
