One definition of the term "poser" is "someone or some band that tries to be or pretend to be something other than what they actually are."
The term has numerous definitions and usually carries a pejorative connotation.
Bands with extravagant hairstyles and over-the-top performances, bands that use distortion with great revelry. Over time, these bands have come to be called "posers.".
We at Wikimetal understand the historical value of many of the bands we've listed below (and others that were left out) and believe there's room for all styles and subgenres.
