Change is the law of life.

The world changes, people change, problems change, music changes, bands change. There comes a time when we end up hearing a new band, a different song, a new style, and that doesn't hurt anyone. Maybe you, a headbanger since rock started, all free and rebellious, turn your nose up at the newer bands, which is understandable.

But it must also be understood that the world is no longer the same, and in the music world things are not very different. It would be boring to talk about the same subjects, always playing in the same way and having the same influences. Even classic bands have been modifying their repertoires a bit. I'm relatively young (I'm 19 years old), but I've had contact with old metal and current metal, and I can say that there's good and new stuff out there.

This brings us to the crucial question: Why not give new bands a chance? Here's a list of 6 bands that are continuing the legacy of metal, even though the music market doesn't open as many doors for rock as it used to.

1. Miss May I

Formed in 2006, this band is simply one of the most respected bands today. They not only deliver powerful screams (which are quite common in newer bands), but their lyrics have substance and the instrumental work is incredible. Music recommendation: Hey Mister.

2. Memphis May Fire

This has been one of my favorites lately. Also formed in 2006, the band brings a heavy sound and the famous mix of guttural and clean vocals (the formula for current success, take note). Why is the band on the list? The lyrics are deep and incredible. You know that band that almost "speaks" for you? Well… Music (and lyrics) recommendation: The Abandoned.

3. Motionless In White

I know, I know, they wear makeup. KISS and Marilyn Manson too. Let's ignore those details and pay attention to the power this band has on stage. Formed in 2005, the band brings that Slipknot-esque style (in fact, Slipknot is one of their biggest influences). The lyrics deal with varied subjects, but mainly the band's singles have impactful lyrics about current society (prejudice, religion, intolerance...). Music recommendation: If It's Dead, We'll Kill It.

4. Protest The Hero

This is the oldest band on the list, formed in 1999, but I couldn't leave them out. The voice that leads the band is a gem; Rody Walker has all my respect. His timbre varies between guttural and classical, it's indescribable. Music recommendation: Sequoia Throne (it was the first one I heard and it was love at first note).

5. Asking Alexandria

The band had two distinct phases and lineups, officially starting in 2008 with Danny Worsnop on vocals. Lately, due to drug and alcohol use, Danny's live voice is quite impaired ( pay attention , singers!), but let's not take away from the guys' talent. Music recommendation: Not The American Average.

6. And so as not to say I didn't mention the flowers: The Agonist

No one can deny that lead singer Alissa White-Gluz is beautiful. Another undeniable fact is her talent; she "screams like a demon and sings like an angel." The band, formed in 2004, has been winning over many fans in a still very male-dominated space. Another noteworthy aspect is the vegan/straight edge lifestyle adopted by the vocalist, who is also an activist in the fight for animal rights. Music recommendation: Business Suits And Combat Boots or You're Coming With Me.

There are other bands I would also include on the list, such as Black Veil Brides (don't be fooled by the makeup, their instrumental work is great) and Pierce The Veil, for those who like something lighter. So there you have it, my recommendations for bands that are doing well in current metal; listen and have fun!
