AC/DC cover band Back In Black announced yesterday that their vocalist, Darren Caperna, was one of those selected to audition as a replacement vocalist for the band. Check out the story posted on the band's social media:
“The audition took place on March 14th at a studio in Atlanta. Caperna had been contacted by AC/DC by phone and immediately took a flight. He was accompanied by Back In Black guitarist Mike Mroz. The audition began with a soundcheck, where the engineers played a few songs with Caperna to adjust the levels and help him feel more comfortable. Then, after a short break, AC/DC entered the room and greeted Caperna and Mroz. “After the soundcheck, Darren and I were talking to the guitar engineers and suddenly I look back and Angus is standing behind me waiting to say hi,” said Mroz.
After meeting the band and having tea, AC/DC put Caperna to work. What was supposed to be a 3-4 song test turned into a 21-song show. Caperna ended up playing the entire “Rock Or Bust” tour set and even a few more songs that Angus wanted to play, “Dog Eat Dog” and “Riff Raff”. Caperna commented: “Before we started playing Riff Raff, Angus came up to me and said, 'I'm warning you beforehand that we're still a bit rusty with this song!' Did I just hear Angus apologizing to me?!”
Mroz and Caperna spent over four hours with their musical heroes. Caperna says, 'It was so surreal, we took a few breaks and Angus told me great stories about Bon Scott. They were so friendly, they treated us like colleagues. I still can't believe I sang with AC/DC.'
Caperna adds, 'Even though I didn't get the gig, it was the experience of a lifetime! Having been in a tribute band for 16 years, we hoped that one day we would meet AC/DC — but this surpasses all expectations! Now I have a great story to tell my grandchildren and the students at the school where I work, 'For Those About To Rock School' in Southlake, Texas. 'This experience was very inspiring and educational — and on top of that, I had my own private AC/DC show, led by my vocalist,' said Mroz. 'At the end of the night I met Angus outside and he told me that Darren had done a great job. I thanked him again for the opportunity. I told him that when we started the tribute band I was kind of uncomfortable wearing his classic school uniform. And then I realized it drove the girls crazy. Angus laughed and replied, 'Don't tell anyone our secret!' ”
AC/DC announced last weekend that Guns N' Roses Axl Rose will fill in for Brian Johnson until the end of the "Rock Or Bust" tour.
