The band paid tribute to the musician with a reinterpretation of a classic song.
The American band The Killers performed a tribute to Tom Petty at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony this Saturday, the 14th.
The band performed a cover of "American Girl," the second single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' debut album, and lead singer Brandon Flowers included a snippet of the classic "Free Fallin'" at the end.
During his presentation, Brandon told the audience: "Let's honor Rock and Roll for the master and eternal Tom Petty." The musician also inducted The Cars into the Hall of Fame, revealing that they were the first band he fell in love with.
The reinterpretation of Tom Petty's classics wasn't the first time the band paid homage to the musician. In 2012, drummer Ronnie Vannucci told Fuse that their sound was influenced by Petty and that he remains a key ingredient in The Killers to this day.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony featured other great performances, such as the reunion of Bon Jovi with Richie Sambora and the tribute to Chris Cornell by Ann Wilson and Jerry Cantrell.
Tom Petty passed away in October 2017 after suffering an accidental overdose of medication he was taking to treat a number of illnesses he had suffered from in recent years.
