With any successful career, there are bound to be some problems along the way, and Slipknot is no exception. In 2004, the group released the excellent Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) , considered by many to be their best, or one of their best, albums.
Around this time, the group also faced some problems. Burger King, the fast-food chain, launched chicken fries in the United States the following year. To promote the new product, the company aired a commercial starring a fictional band called COQ ROQ , whose members wore masks similar to those used by Slipknot.
According to the fast-food , the intention was for the masks to make the COQ ROQ members look like chickens. However, the media and fans constantly compared them to Corey Taylor and the other members of the band.
Therefore, the group decided to file a lawsuit against Burger King. A copy of the letter written by Slipknot's lawyers explained the situation: “It is obvious that this television advertisement is designed to evoke the image and personality of a Slipknot performance. In addition to conveying the high energy of a band show, the members of COQ ROQ wear masks. Among them, we have a gas mask, worn by Slipknot member Sid Wilson, a mask based on Japanese Kabuki theater, worn by Joey Jordison, and a mask with dreadlocks, usually worn by vocalist Corey Taylor.”
The network, during the process, said that the concept used by Slipknot was a parody, based on other bands that performed wearing masks, and cited groups such as KISS , Gwar , Mushroomhead , and Mudvayne.
Despite being a fictional band, the members of COQ ROQ even had names and their own website at the time, which is now unavailable. The group consisted of Fowl Mouth, The Talisman, Kabuki, Free Range, Sub-Sonic, and even had a fire-breathing member called Firebird. The song that gained fame from the commercial is called "Bob Your Head".
In the end, both Slipknot and Burger King dropped the subject, but the commercial remained on the air.
