The Cult announces an indefinite career hiatus.

Led by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, the band announces that it will be "taking a break from touring indefinitely."

The Cult, led by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy , announced that they will be "taking a break from touring indefinitely." But that "the bond is communal and will not be broken, only interrupted."

The band released a statement on social media last Wednesday, the 22nd, explaining their decision to pause their career. Read the full statement below:

“Mother Nature has a cycle of change and evolution that is inevitable. The phases of the moon change, the tides rise and fall. Change is necessary for creation and rebirth. It is with this in mind that, after the remaining dates of our current North American tour THE CULT / DEATH CULT 8525 , we have decided to take an indefinite break from touring. We have toured extensively in recent years and will now shift our focus to composing, recording new music, and exploring other projects that will be revealed over time. It is a time to turn inward and recharge our spiritual batteries.”

When we return to the stage, it will be with an even stronger fire and energy that we will share with you all. Our bond is communal and will not be broken, only interrupted. Until then, we have five shows remaining on this current tour, culminating at The Shrine in Los Angeles on October 30th. Join us for what has been an incredible celebration of 40 years of THE CULT and DEATH CULT. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and support. It keeps us alive.”.

What do the original members of The Cult say?

The band, led by founding members vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, has rock classics in its discography such as "She Sells Sanctuary," "Fire Woman," "Rain," and "Give Me Mercy.".

Shortly after the announcement, Billy Duffy added: “It’s been a wonderful three years celebrating our music with THE CULT family around the world. Now it’s time to go home, spend time with our families and create new music.”

Ian Astbury has stated: “My deepest gratitude to everyone who attended and immersed themselves in our world. I am deeply grateful to be connected to our CULT family as we prepare for our final five shows, and we take this opportunity to delve deeper into our next creative adventures. More information coming soon. Blessings to all.”

Death Cult gave rise to what is now The Cult. In 2023, they toured to mark the band's 40th anniversary, where Astbury and Duffy were joined by John Tempesta on bass and Charlie Jones on drums. The tour included a stop in Brazil in February 2025.
