Planet Earth has just come closer to the end of its existence and is now only 2 minutes from the apocalypse ("2 Minutes To Midnight") as predicted by Iron Maiden in the classic song from Powerslave .
The organization "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists" has advanced by 30 seconds the clock that metaphorically marks our proximity to a global catastrophe that would determine the end of humanity when the clock strikes midnight.
"As of today, we are two minutes to midnight," said the organization's president, Rachel Bronson.
The group, which includes 15 Nobel Prize-winning scientists on its board, justified the 30-second advance by citing the current state of geopolitical affairs, including "the failure of President Trump and other world leaders to address the threats of nuclear war and climate change .
The clock that measures the proximity of the end of humanity had already been moved forward last year to 2 minutes and 30 seconds before midnight.
The current toll is the closest humanity has come to destruction since 1953, when the United States tested its first thermonuclear bomb and the Soviet Union its hydrogen bomb.
"The world is not only more dangerous today than it was last year; it is as threatening as it was during World War II.".
