Steve Harris is not only the bassist and founder of Iron Maiden , but also one of the band's main songwriters. In a conversation on the Scars and Guitars , he names what he considers to be the best song from the band's vast discography of over 150 tracks and 17 studio albums.
Iron Maiden 's best songs are classics like "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Fear Of The Dark," "Aces High," "The Trooper," and others. However, Steve doesn't consider any of these anthems to be Maiden's best song. The track belongs to Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988), the band's seventh studio album. “I think it would be better to choose a song written by three of us,” he explains, referring also to vocalist Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith . “It doesn’t have much of my songwriting elements in it. So I’d probably choose something like ‘The Evil That Men Do,’ which was written by the three of us; we’re the main songwriters. Dave also writes, but he’s not very prolific. Nicko doesn’t write, Janick joined much later, but he’s become quite a prolific songwriter. I’d still say ‘The Evil That Men Do.’” [transcription via Whiplash ].
