The vocalist was born on September 5th, 1946.
The International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center named an asteroid after Queen's lead singer, Freddie Mercury, to honor what would have been his 70th birthday on September 5, 2016. Asteroid 17473, now called Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury, was discovered in 1991, the year of Mercury's death.
Study proves Freddie Mercury's voice is an unusual phenomenon.
Queen guitarist Brian May spoke about the tribute: "This announcement is to recognize Freddie's influence worldwide ." The organization, in turn, says the honor comes from "the distinctive sound and wide vocal range that were a trademark of his performance, and for being considered one of the greatest vocalists of all time .
One of the project's researchers, Joel Parker, stated: "Every scientific paper in the future that deals with this asteroid will refer to it as '17473 Freddiemercury'. And even if you can't see Freddiemercury traveling across the sky, you can be sure it's there."
