After four years without releasing new albums, The Pretty Reckless returned in February of this year with the highly anticipated album Death By Rock And Roll . But, due to a period of depression, Taylor Momsen almost forgot the passion she felt for music.
The project is the band's fourth studio album and addresses personal themes of the vocalist, such as grieving the death of her friend Chris Cornell and Kato Khandwala , the band's former producer .
“Our new album is very… I call it a rebirth, it feels like the first album all over again,” she commented in a conversation with Amy Lee of Evanescence Consequence of Sound channel . “Because we lost almost everything, we had to start from scratch again, learn to rebuild from the beginning. I got to such a low point of depression (…) that I couldn’t listen to music for a while. Everything I listened to carried a message that was too painful, it was too much to handle.”
To emerge from this period of complete isolation, Taylor says it took a lot of "inner work" and she wonders where her love for music came from when she started her career. Even so, she still hasn't been able to find an answer. "So [I thought]: I'll start from the beginning, with the first thing I fell in love with, which was the Beatles ," the vocalist continued.
After listening to the entire Beatles anthology, including demos, the New Yorker gradually progressed through the bands, from Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd , until she mustered the strength to listen to Soundgarden again after her friend's death. "It took a lot of effort to be able to write that album," she concluded.
This week, Taylor Momsen participated in the program Mind Wide Open Lily Cornell 's channel (Chris Cornell's daughter), to talk about mental health.
