Shane Hawkins , son of the late Taylor Hawkins , won the award for best performance of the year at the Drumeo Awards ceremony, which celebrates drummers. The performance that earned him this feat was "My Hero" with the Foo Fighters at the tribute concert for his father held in London in September. This was the first time the band had taken the stage since the drummer's death .
“The winner of this award delivered a legendary and unmissable performance during 2022, whether with a full band at an event or in a solo studio video. Sixteen-year-old Shane Hawkins did exactly that, pouring his heart and soul into a live performance of 'My Hero' at a tribute concert for his late father and Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. He touched millions and showed just how much love, energy, and spirit can come from the drums,” said the award organization (via Whiplash ).
The performance also caught the attention of Stewart Copeland , drummer for The Police , who said in an interview with CBS : “I started crying. He has so much power, enthusiasm. He has his father's posture, musical language. It was very moving to see young Shane up there” (via Louder Sound ).
The Drumeo Awards , which totaled over 800,000 votes, took place in December, and the results were announced at the end of January via a live stream . 75 drummers from 16 countries were nominated across 15 categories.
Chad Smith and Travis Barker were other highlights of the night. While the Red Hot Chili Peppers took home the Drummer of the Year award, the Blink-182 won Best Rock Drummer.
