The band's most recent albums are from 2005.
In a recent interview with Revolver , Daron Malakian , guitarist for System of a Down , stated that the band has failed in its attempts to record a new album. The group's last two albums, Mesmerize and Hypnotize , were released in 2005.
“I can’t say we’ll never do it, but it won’t be now. It doesn’t seem like we’ll be recording anything together anytime soon. I’m not going to close the book and say we’re separated forever. We still play live. We’re still friends,” he explained. “It’s just that each of us is at a different stage of life, and we want to do different things. We haven’t been able to agree on a direction to take System’s next project. But that’s okay. I’m not upset. Just frustrated with this waiting, not knowing if it will happen or not.”
Malakian's interview with Revolver caused a great stir. The buzz was so great that vocalist Serj Tankian commented on the situation to Rolling Stone . "We discussed the possibility of releasing new music. And we even played some of each other's tracks, but we haven't decided how to proceed yet."
System of a Down has toured extensively over the past few years, but the group hasn't released any new material in 13 years. In 2016, drummer John Dolmayan revealed that the band had written a dozen new songs, but that they were in limbo.
Meanwhile, Scars on Broadway , Malakian's side project, will release a new album on July 20th. The album, titled Dictator, already has two samples available: the title track and "Lives" .
