Sting spoke about his vocal range in a new interview, jokingly suggesting that his register made him "a heavy metal singer".

The Police frontman made the comments during an interview with Rick Beato and guitarist Dominic Miller . “I’m not here to belong to a genre or conform to any kind of rule. I just do what I instinctively feel I want to do,” he said.

“I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and the privilege to do this. I also have help from some fantastic musicians who think the same way; exploring the whole spectrum of music, and not just saying, ‘we’re in this niche here.’ We’re not. We do everything,” he stated.

During the conversation, Beato pointed out that one of The Police's biggest hits, "Roxanne," features a particularly high vocal register. "I think the registers are interesting. Most heavy metal singers sing there. So, I'm a heavy metal singer, but I have a bit more melody," said the 70-year-old singer.

“It’s the same way that, to stay above the noise of the band, you need that register. You can’t be a baritone with a real rock band,” he added.

Sting's new album, The Bridge , was released last week by A&M Records. See the full interview below.
