Singer collaborates with Fleetwood Mac and now as a solo artist.
Last week , the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released the list of artists nominated for the 2019 class. Among them are Def Leppard, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, The Cure, and The Zombies , but the highlight is Stevie Nicks .
The singer became the first woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for the second time. Nicks was inducted in 1998 alongside Fleetwood Mac , and now she will be inducted again, but this time as a solo artist.
“I have a lot to say about this,” she said in a statement to the press, “But I’ll save those words for later. For now, I’ll just say that I’ve been in a band since 1968, and being recognized as a solo artist makes me happy and smiling. It’s an incredible feeling.”
This news is a milestone for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, given its history of inequality. The first woman inducted into the Hall was Aretha Franklin in 1987, and since then only 44 women and bands with female members have joined the list, totaling 13.6%.
2019 will also be the first time since 2013 that two women will be inducted into the Hall of Fame together – Stevie Nicks and Janet Jackson. The last time this happened was with Donna Summer and Heart .
The number of male artists who have been featured more than once is large. Eric Clapton – three times, once solo, once with The Yardbirds and once with Cream – Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Lou Reed, Rod Stewart and all the Beatles.
