Steve Mackey joined Pulp in 1989 to make the album Separations and remained in the band until its hiatus in 2002. They reunited for a world tour between 2011 and 2012 and released their last song, “After You,” in 2013. The band was scheduled to do a reunion tour in the winter of 2023, but Mackey declined the opportunity in 2022, stating that he preferred to continue his projects in film and photography.
On social media, Pulp mourned the death of their friend and posted a photo of Mackey in 2012 in the Andes Mountains. “We were in South America and had a day off. Steve suggested we go climbing the Andes Mountains, so we went. It was a magical experience. Much more magical than staring at the hotel wall all day (which we probably would have done). Steve made things happen. In his life and in the band,” they wrote.
