Steve Lukather, from Toto and G3, talks about Frank Zappa

"He tortured me. It was really scary because he wasn't nice to me."

Steve Lukather, five-time Grammy-winning guitarist known for his work with Toto and G3, recounted in an interview with Guitar Player Magazine what happened when he auditioned to join Frank Zappa's band.

“You study and wait for the right moments, and they aren’t always great.
I tell the story about my audition with Frank Zappa in my book.
Frank didn’t want to see 150 guitarists play, so he made my audition impossible.”

I was the first guitarist. He tortured me, it's in the book. I go into detail there. I don't want to relive it because it was very painful, very embarrassing for me. And it was really scary, because he wasn't nice to me.

I was 17 years old and I thought, 'That's it. My career is over. I'm not good enough. I'll never make it.' I tried not to cry, it was humiliating, and I said, “Fuck it! I'm going to take this energy and turn it into something positive, I'm going to prove him wrong. I'm going to make it, I'll be someone, and someday he'll know it.”

The book Steve is referring to is his autobiography, titled "The Gospel According to Luke ," which will be released on April 5th.
