Steve Harris is always remembered as one of the leading bassists in the world of metal. The frontman of Iron Maiden , he also has a side project called British Lion .
Much smaller than Iron Maiden, the bands have a number of differences between them, some of which can be considered good, while others, not so much.
The legendary group is known for their lengthy songs, especially in recent years on more recent albums – see the track “The Parchment” from Senjutsu (2021) – while British Lion already has shorter songs.
This is something the bassist himself acknowledges, as stated in an interview with Loudwire in 2020: "The guys from British Lion control things and the way the songs are structured, they don't need the big, long parts."
Another issue, also related to the composition of the songs, concerns how the drums function within the band. Simon Dawson uses a double bass pedal in the songs on British Lion, which is not the same as Nicko McBrain .
According to what Harris said, he can't play "against him, but rather, play alongside him. That's what I think, otherwise it becomes a battle and that's not so good."
Contrary to expectations, Steve Harris doesn't see British Lion as a breath of fresh air compared to Maiden, since he does far more practical things, like booking hotels, for his second project.
Now, one thing he really likes about playing with British Lion is the opportunity to stay closer to the audience, since the performances are much smaller, in more private venues.
